7/16/09-Gage has not had an accident in the house all week! I don't want to knock on wood yet but.........:) I have fallen totally in love with this goofy guy! He is still such a playful little (well not so little) guy! He really has come out of his shell. His only fault is he doesn't realize when its time to take a break. When he gets playing he just gets so happy that he will play forever-lol. You have to gently remind him when its time to take a break. He reminds me of a puppy. He is VERY toy motivated so training him will be a breeze!!! He will do anything for a ball-lol. He also just wants to please his humans. I think he may have been spoken to very harshly when he was with his last family. He does not like yelling and will run and hide in his cage like he is in trouble when someone talks real loud or yells. I have a VERY loud teenage daughter and I think poor Gage wonders why she is always so loud-lol. I tried explaining to him that teenage girls are a "special" breed but he hides anyway:) He isn't so possessive of his crate anymore. i think he just needed to get used to his surroundings. he feels comfortable enough that the other dogs can venture in there with him....even when he has a toy, or 2, or 3 lol.
7/4/09- Well we are back from camping, and I have to say Gage did great! We discovered he absolutly LOVES to play ball. He will jump and get 3 feet off the ground to catch the ball! He would love flyball or frisbee classes/playtime!! He has the cutest bark when he wants attention. Its sorta like a breathy half bark :) If you ignore him he will nudge you with his nose. He is a little possessive when it comes to his crate. If he is in it, he will growl at another dog if they try to come in. He doesn't do anything but growl and the other dogs know to leave him be when he is in his crate. Gage also LOVES to steal all the toys in the house and hide them in his crate. My dogs just wait until he comes out and then they go in and steal the toys back. Its quite funny to watch. We are working on housebreaking Gage. He seems to understand he isn't supposed to mark in the house but is stubborn about 2 or 3 places. He will mark, then run to his crate and hide. This shows us he knows he needs to go outside. He really enjoys walks, so we are making sure we bring him out when he marks in the house. After he goes outside we praise him and toss the ball around for a few minutes. This seems to be working but he will need this to be continued when in his new home. He may slide back a little so stay diligent! Gage doesn't show any interest in going swimming. He may be new to the whole swimming idea, but he just sorta looked at me like I was crazy when I tried to get him to swim in the creek-lol. He really is a wonderful dog that just loves to be around his family! With a little patience, love, and training he will make a perfect lifelong companion! Apply now for Gage, he is looking forward to a summer filled with hikes, camping, and walks with his new family!
**update**Gage is currently camping in Alleghany with his foster family and other resident dogs. =) He'll be back on the 4th and we'll let you know how he did.
Gage is settling in nicely! He has no interest in my cats and warmed up very quickly to my MANY other dogs! He was a bit shy and anxious the first night, so we let him spend a lot of time in his crate which was in the living room with us. When he did come out he ran around "marking" everything! He takes redirection VERY well and day 2 went much better. He only marked a few times. He is starting to play with the other dogs and LOVES his humans!! He seems like a pup still. He is a fun loving goofy guy! He does not have food or toy aggression and takes treats nicely. He doesn't seem to really know any basic commands but we are working on that. He likes walks but does pull at first. He just gets so excited to go for a walk. Of course he has to mark everything outside-lol. He does well on a tie out too. He really seems to love being outside with his humans. He would make a great dog for a family that goes camping, hiking, to the park...those kind of activities. He rides very well in a car. He just lays down on the back seat and enjoys the ride. He is still a little skittish so we approach him slowly so we don't spook him. He seems to appreciate this. He will nudge you when he wants attention and seems to like sitting on the couch next to you-lol. My house has pet friendly furniture so he is allowed to do this. He was found as a stray but seems to know "house manners". I would think he had to be someone's pet before.
I will add more as we get to know Gage better!!
